How the Kunphen Foundation came into being

Geleg Tsering is the founder of the Kunphen Foundation. He was born in the village of Tashi Jong in the Indian Himalayas north of New Delhi. Geleg is of Tibetan descent. In 1959, his mother fled with other Tibetans from Kham Nangchen in eastern Tibet when it was annexed by communist China. All Tibetans in Tashi Jong, both monks and lay people, are refugees. Their spiritual leader is His Eminence the eighth and ninth Khamtrul Rinpoches, reincarnations of a high lama. Traditionally, Tibetans receive their names as a blessing from their honored lama. This is also the case with Geleg. He received his name from the eighth Khamtrul Rinpoche. 'Geleg' means 'happiness' and 'Tsering' means 'long life'.

Foundation Kunphen Annual Report 2024

1. General Information

In the 2024 calendar year, Foundation Kunphen worked to improve living conditions in Tashi Jong, with a particular focus on drinking water facilities, waste management, and support for vulnerable residents.

2. Activities in 2024

2.1 Drinking Water Facility
In February 2024, Foundation Kunphen provided financial support for the repair of the drinking water facility in Tashi Jong.
The protective wall surrounding the water facility was severely deteriorated and damaged. A local contractor, Mr. Jago, was engaged to fully rebuild and repaint the wall.
Outcome: A sustainable and restored drinking water facility.
Evidence: Photos of the completed work are available on the Foundation’s website.

2.2 Replacement of Water Pipelines
In April 2024, a board member of the Foundation visited Tashi Jong, partly to attend the annual Lama Dance ritual.
During this visit, new water pipes were purchased and the old ones were replaced.
Outcome: Improved water supply in the village and reliable access to clean water.
Evidence: Photos of the work are available on the Foundation’s website.

2.3 Tackling the Waste Problem
The Tashi Jong community has been struggling with a serious waste problem for many years due to the absence of waste collection facilities. Plastic is often burned, which harms air quality, and other waste such as cans is dumped into the river.
In 2024, the Foundation took the following steps: Organized a village meeting to discuss the waste issue. Consulted with the local government office on potential solutions.
Visited a waste recycling facility to gather information and advice. The recycling facility advised that plastic and cans from Tashi Jong can be delivered there for processing. All preparations for the waste management project in Tashi Jong have now been completed.
Evidence: Photos and reports of these activities are available on the Foundation’s website.

2.4 Support for Vulnerable Elderly Residents
In 2024, donations were provided for the purchase of medicines and food packages for elderly residents of Tashi Jong.
Evidence: These transactions are documented in the financial report published on the Foundation’s website.

3. Financial Overview

The 2024 financial report has been prepared separately and is available on the Foundation’s website.
It provides a detailed breakdown of all income, expenses, and expenditures per project.

4. Acknowledgements

The board of Foundation Kunphen wishes to sincerely thank all donors and supporters for their contributions in 2024. Thanks to your help, we were able to implement  sustainable improvements for the Tashi Jong community.
